Saviors
We have discussed the things the soldiers carried and how those things connect to our own lives. This time I want you to really analyze chapter one. We have talked about saviors, what it means to be a savior, and listed some on the board. Name a savior that you see in chapter one. What makes this person a savior? If someone takes your answer, you need to expand on someone's answer.

Lieutenant cross is the platoon leader and feels that he must save his troops. The lieutenant's name is symbolic of jesue the his name cross symbolizes the sacifice of crist.

In a way I would say that Ted Lavender is a savior. For one reason would be because he gave up his life for America. Another reason would be that because he died Jimmy realized he was not caring about his men, but caring for Martha, who does not even love him.

Well, an example in Chapter one of a savior is Ted Lavender. Because of his death, he provides a wake-up call to Lieutenant Cross regarding his adoration for Martha. This saves Lt. Cross from his misery. "Ted Lavender was dead becasue he loved her so much and could not stop thinking about her." (P. 7).
I think Martha could be a savior for Lietunant Cross. She is a savior for his sanity even though she might relize it or care. She gives Lietunant Cross a release from all the killings and hardships he has to face in the war because it gives him something else to think about. Sort of an outlet to take his emotions out on.

Out of everybody so far, I would have to say that Martha is a savior because she is what drives LT. Cross to stay alive and I think that he would do anything to stay alive just to see her again.

During the course of the first chapter, you are introduced to Jimmy Crosses love back home, Martha. The reason why Martha is a preceived as a "Savior" in Jimmy eyes is due to the fact that he is away from the girl that he loves! Therefore, during the course of the first chapter, Jimmy does alot of things that are symbolic of Martha. (pg.8) " He loved her so much. On the March, through the hot days of early April, he carried the pebble in his mouth, turning it with his tongue, tasting sea salt and moisture. His mind wandering." Also, Jimmy would imagine her bare feet walking in the sand with him, but the thing that really stood out to me was when he was licking the envelopes trying to taste her slavia. Which showed how much he missed her and loved her, also, how much she meant to him and how she may be the reason that keeps him alive.

to me i think that Lieutenant cross. the reason is because he is in charge of his platoon, and is responsible for what happens to his men. He is to make sure sure that no one is left behind and that no man is killed. he is suppose to over watch, and scan the area before he has his troops settle down. to his men he would be their savior.

I would say that Kiowa is somewhat of a savior in the aspect that he's the one that saw Ted Lavender die, he was the one who reported it and explained how it happened so no one else would. Ordinarily a man who was in war and scared of all the events happening around him, would walk away from the event, keep to himself, and have someone else break the bad news. Kiowa did no such thing, he took on the burden of telling what had happened so the others would be free of the weight from one more thing to carry.

Lieutenant Cross is the platoon leader and feels that he must save his troops. The lieutenant's name is symbolic of Jesus and his sacrifice. His name cross symbolizes the sacrifice of Jesus and foreshadows something that the lieutenant my have to do. Near the end of the chapter Lieutenant Cross decides harden his treatment toward the troops he commands. At this point he does not care if they hate him he only wants to keep them safe. “Among the men there would be grumbling, of course, and maybe worse; because their days would seem longer and their heavier, but Lieutenant Jimmy Cross reminded himself that his obligation was not to be loved but to lead.” An old proverb my foster father told me says “A great leader is hated.” Not because he rules trough fear but because he is uncompromising with the people he leads. A savior and a leader are synonyms to me because to lead you must be able to sacrifice for the people you lead making you there savior. Lieutenant Cross fits the definition of a leader and a savior

My savior is not a person but a material object. The weapons and supplies that Alpha Company has with them can save their lives. Without these supplies even the best warrior in the field of combat doesn't stand a chance without a weapon.
The post about the weapons is from Chris Austin
A hero or savior shown through out the first chapter is Lietenent Lavender. He lived for what he was doing which was serving his country before anything. And setting his priorities wisely. He died for his country. As was Lavender was dying all Cross could think of was Martha. She helped him get his mind of it and remain happy. So She could be considered as a savior also.

A savior that would come to mind to me woould be Martha because its what keeps Lt. Cross believing in a better hope like God does to people. Also Martha keepes the days going by ad keeps Lt. Cross alive.

Lavender is definitely a savior in this chaptar. First of all he died for his country. Secondly he made Lt. Cross realize he was focusing too much on Martha and not enough on his soldiers. And last but certainly not least, he let his buddies smoke his dope after he died.

I was not there to talk about saviors with you guys but I believe a savior can be represented as many things. A savior to me may not be a savior to you. I believe Lavender is of course a savior because of his death and helped Cross to realize he should care more about his troops and reason he is there instead of Martha but also, I see him as a savior in another way. The way he holds Martha so close and is all about his love for her he is being a savior to himself. He is keeping his spirits up by thinking about what he holds dear to him. All soldiers need that. It helps to bring them home. When he thought about him and her in the tunnel and if it collapsed on them at least they would be buried alive together full of love. I think that it may be a little morbid but in reality he is keeping himself in good spirits with nothing but her love.

No person in the chapter is a true savior. The true savior is the things that they carried. I think that all of the items that they carried keep them sane and occupy their time. Kiowa carries a bible which he uses as a pillow and Sanders carries a yo-yo to keep his mind clear of things to focus on the yo-yo.
Tyler
Tyler -
I think it is interesting that you focus on the objects. I didn't look at it in that manner, but I think you are right - these "things" do save them in a way.
Lieutenant Cross is the savior in this chapter. Cross, after losing one of his men, changes how his platoon does things. He makes sure that they are not taking things lightly in order to keep all of his men alive. He also sacrafices his love for Martha. He can no longer continue to day dream about her because it is causing a distraction. He blames the death of Lavender on himself because at the time he was thinking about Martha.
Lietenat cross is the bigest saver in the bunch because he has the most grace about a siduwation. He treats the men more like family then a bunch of grunts he has to baby sit. I like how steven put that his name is cross because of the sacrafies hes doin for his men.

It is a bit late to reply with my own answer, since everybody else has, so all I can really do is agree with some of the others:
James is totally correct, I think. Had it not been for him thinking of Martha, I think he could have been better at leading his troops and keeping them in order, not to mention keep Lavender alive.
I totally agree with Tyler in his unique response as well. The tangibles definately play a key role in their survival. Without the guns, grenades, Kiowa's bible, whatever it may be. I think these are definately saviors to some of the characters. Some, however, pertain to some characters more than others such as Kiowa to his bible.

To me the savior is Lt. Jimmy Cross. He knows as the leader he must sacrafice everything for his men. He knows that he is leading them and trying to protect them in this state of war. His name does relate to crist. Crist was the savior for everyones sins and in a way he is the savior for his men. He is the one that decides what goes on and if it is safe or not. He determines their fate pretty much. Just like crist he is trying to get his men to safety in the end, to bring them all home safe and well.

I think beside Martha being Lt. Jimmy Cross's savior. Mary Anne was also another savior, she was a savior to Mark Fossie, they had been elemetary sweethearts.
