The presence of a father in a boys life is very crucial. When we are little we are raised with the knowledge that a proud parent is a happy parent; therefor we want our parents to be proud of our accomplishments and success in life. Norman feels inadequate with the seven medals because it wasn't about the medals, more about what the medals stood for. Thing he wanted his father to be proud of. The thing he wanted most in my opinion was to save Koiwa. Without that eigth medal, the silver star, none of the others mattered. It wasn't the medals it was the deeper meaning behind the medals. Kiowa mattered more than just silver sitting on Norman's jacket. It was what he did that he wanted his father to be proud of and since he didn't accomplish the thing that haunts him most today, he can't help but bring back his father making sure he's still proud.

Bower was more disapointed about the fact that he could not save Kiaw who had looked out for him. Expesely when bower killed the vitamese solider and told jim to talk about it. which is the main reason he is sad about not getting the mettle, not the mettal it self but the fact he could not over his fear and save his freind.
when it comes to his father, the dad never heard the story. Bower is asumming that is how his dad would re sponded to the tragady.

Norman Bowker feels inadequte because he didn't win the silver star award becuase he was not brave. But in reality he feels inadequte because he did not save his friend Kiowa's life when he most deffinatly could of.
His father is such a presence in his mental life because he so desperatly wants to tell someone, and that someone is his father.
It would change norman's life to get the medal because that would mean that he had saved Kiowa and became a hero and concoured his hatred of the smell of the **** feild.

Its not the eighth metal that he wants but his friend who he lost during an ambush. Regardless of the reward, he wanted to save his friend. Kiowa being a nice guy makes his death more significant than anyone elses who we have seen.

Bowker feels inadequate because he thinks he doesn't deserve those medals because the other men in the platoon or regiment have done harder things than him to deserve it. His fathers impact on his life has to do with his medals his father is only proud of his son it feels like because he has those seven medals. No not really because his fathe rwould still treat him the same and parade him around.
The death of Kiowa because that was like his best friend and he died in a s*** field as O'Brien states it. After surviving everything he dies the most worst way to me drowning.

When it comes down to it, it is not really about the metals that he was awarded. It is more about what the metals stand for. The reason he feels most inadequate is because of what the silver star would have stood for and that is the one that he did not recieve. Norman's father is the biggest presence in his mental life becuase that is who he wants to most impress. We all want are parents to be proud and that is the same for Norman. Norman would probably feel better and more fufilled in life if he would have got that silver star.
The death of Kiowa is probably the most difficult thing for Norman. He feels he comtributed to his death because he thinks he could have saved him. Even though he did many other things that were brave and couragous that is the one thing that he feels he could have done but didn't. This makes him feel the other things he did weren't anything really special.

Bowker still feels inadequate with his seven metals because he could have earned one more; and because he didn't earn that metal, Kiowa died. Norman's father plays such a big part in his mental life because he could have confided in him, making a connection to life outside of the war.
I don't think that it would have made a big difference if he would have earned that last metal. It might have in a sense that he wouldn't feel as guilty for Kiowa's death, but ultimately he still would have nowhere to make a connection to the real world, leaving him lonely and alone.
I would say that stormin Norman feels inadequate is because he didnt win the silver star and he lost a fellow soldier as well as a good friend in Kiawa who he could have saved. But the loss of Kiawa effects him more. But on the other hand not getting that silver star effects him because of his dad. He just wants to show his dad that he is a true soldier even though he didnt do as much as the others.

Norman Bowker feels inadequte with seven medals because he didn't save his friends life when he had the chance. Normans father is important in his life because when he was little he probaly looked up to him and wanted to make him proud. I don't think it would of made a difference in Normans life to when eight medals because over time they would probaly just wither away in a box somewhere.
I think the most difficult problem Norman is not saving his friend because he keeps on replaying it in his mind over and over again.

The reason why I think Norman Bowker feels inadequate about recieving only seven awards is because he wanted his dad to be proud of him for what he has done. But I dont think he can settle for what he has already accomplished while being in the war.
I think what is more difficult for Norman Bowker is the lack of the silver star. The reasoing being because he really didnt care if he had saved his life or not. he says"I was cool if things had gone right, if it hadn't been for the smell, I could've won the silver star." pg 150

I believe that if Norman Bowker would have won the silver star then Kiowa would have gotten out of the bad smelling field alive. Norman's father is such a presence in his mental life because he wants his dad to be proud of him for winning all those medals. If Norman had the silver star then Kiowa might still be alive so yes it would have changed his life because he wouldn't feel as bad about Kiowa's death.
The more difficult problem for Norman is Kiowa's death. He was good friends with Kiowa and it is always hard to lose close friends.

Norman's father is such a presence in his mental life because he is the only person that he still has a tie to in the sity. He would be able to sit down and talk to him about his medals and what had happened in the field.
The death of Kiowa is more of a difficult problem for Bowker because he ends up killing himself over it.

I think Bowker is upset about not getting the last medal because he was not brave enough. I think his father is a presence in his mental life because he acts as if he is always having a conversation with him. If Norman had eight medals, I don't think it would make a difference. Come on, seven medals is a pretty great accomplishment I think. No real need for another one.
I would hope the loss of Kiowa is more difficult for Bowker. If you lose a medal, big deal; you can earn those another time. If your friend dies, however, you cannot get them back.
I do not think it would matter if he had eight start, the silver star, or twenty. He feels a guilt that one of his fellow troops died, and not him. Koiwa could have been going home to a town the knew him and a family that loved him. But no, Koiwa died and he is faced with the loneliness of his home town.

1. Norman Bowker feels as if he could never get enough medals because he has low self-esteem because he is totally excluded in his community. When ever he makes a mention of a pretend conversation, he always brings up something about the Silver Star. "'How's it being married?' he might ask, and he'd nod at whatever she answered with, and he would not say a word about how he'd almost won the Silver Star for valor." (P. 140). So by getting a lot of medals, he thought that he would be more accepted by his community, which would make no diffrence, because he didn't have any friends there anyways. The constant reminder of his father is because he always looked up to him.
2. I think that the loss of the Silver Star is more of a problem for Norman, because he feels with out it, he is worthless. "And his father would of nodded, knowing full well that many brave men do not win medals for their bravery, and that others win mendals for doing nothing." (P. 141).
1.I believe that having a father is very important. I think him seeeing himself as inadequate does not really have to do with him really being inadequate its just that he does not feel that he will ever be good enough for his father. Even when his father told him that he was good and he was not wrong for not saving him he still thinks that he could make his father proud by getting evrything. He doesnt realize that his father already is proud of him. If he had gotten the silver star then I think in his mind he still could have done more.
2. I think that Kiowas death is nore difficult because he believes it was partially his fault. He thinks that he just gave up because of the awful smell and that if he would have tried harder and pushed through it that he would have been able to save his best friend.
_Malori_
He still fells inadequate because he didn't save Kiowa his best friend, that in turn would've givven him the silver star.
It really would change his life if he did have the star beacause that would mean that Kiowa would be alive.
There is no difinative problem that takes presence over one another, the star for his father or the life of his best friend.

Norman still feels inadequate with 7 medals because he feels responsible for Kiowa's death. He might have been fine not winning another medal if it hadn't been a silver star. Norman's father took pride in him having so many medals, it was what he wanted from his son. It might provide Norman some solace have gotten the 8th medal.
Kiowa is the reason Norman is having such a problem with not getting the silver star, while simultaneously, Norman not having the silver star makes him feel guilty for not saving him.

Norman bowber is inadequate with him self because he blames himself for Kiowa’s death. he thinks that it is his fault Kiowa is dead. If he had not saved Kiowa and gotten the silver star i do not believe he would have felt better about what happened in the $#!+ field.

Norman doesn't feel like he's earned them, or that he doesn't deserve them.
The harder thing for Norman is Kiowa's death. He feels like he should've been strong enough to pull him out of the muck. But he feels like he fell just a bit short.
Kat
Norman Bowker feels inadequate becuase he did not get the silver star award for bravery. Also, since he didn't save his best friend "Kiowa" he feels deeply depressed about the situation and is going to have to live with this for the rest of his life, knowing that he could have saved his best friend, and probably would have been remembered as a hero or done somthin heroic.
